MWHS 50 Year Club Parlor of Lillian Peek Cottage

About $17,000 needed to complete Parlor!

Beth Ramsey Visentine
Class of 1960

The new chandeliers and wall sconces in the Lillian Peek Cottage were beautifully accessorized with drapes just before the 2015 Reunion. Just in time for visitors to admire the room and visualize the plans for the Parlor.

Beth Ramsey Visentine created the window treatment. The drapery fabric, shown in the third picture, and fabric for the sheers was provided by John and Jo Murphy. John Murphy and David Visentine installed the rod and draperies.

There is still about $17,000.00 needed to complete the Parlor. If you can help:

MWHS 50 Year Club Welcomes Class of 1965 into its Membership ~ June 13, 2015

Induction of Class of 1965

A buzz was heard as the auditorium began to fill with members of Mineral Wells High School classes from 1942 to 1965. Friends saw one another across the large space and hands began to wave and smiles broke out with anticipation of what the day was going to bring.

The Class of 1965 was especially excited as they waited for their Induction into the membership club for all students from Mineral Wells whose graduation year would have been at least 50 years ago or more.

Finally, a hush came over the crowd as the presiding president of the club made his way to the podium.

Ken R. Kessler Gives Response on Behalf of MWHS Class of 1965 for Induction into 50 Year Club

Class of 1965
Response to Induction
into the
MWHS 50 Year Club

by Ken R. Kessler
June 13, 2015

We would like to welcome alumni and classmates, and say congratulations to the Mineral Wells High School Class of 1965 as we finally have the honor to join the 50 Year Club! We would like to thank the Class of 1966 for acting as our official special greeters and our class wanted me to ask them to forgive us for any past hazing - but I'm not doing it!

It has been said that the greatest gain is to give to others, and the greatest loss is to receive without gratitude.

In that spirit I would like to continue by offering the following sincere thanks on behalf of our entire class:
  • We're thankful to have been raised in a beautiful small town located in the greatest state in the union.
  • We're thankful for Clint Murchison, Tex Schramm, Tom Landry, Dandy Don, Bob Lily, and the Dallas Cowboys.
  • We're thankful for bicycles, Chevys, Fords and Chryslers.
  • We're thankful that we never had to look for our car keys, because they were always in the ignition.
  • We're thankful that we got our "coke" at Jimmie's and the Dairy Queen.
  • We're thankful for Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, the Rolling Stones, and the Beatles.
  • We're thankful for John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Dean Martin, and Johnny Carson.
  • We're thankful for school athletics, cheerleaders, pep rallies, and the school band.
  • We're thankful for the Grand Theater, first loves and first kisses.
  • We're thankful for the alumni and upperclassmen who furnished our heros, showed us the way and offered us friendship and counsel.
  • We're thankful that in our schools we were always and truly educated, not indoctrinated, by caring and dedicated teachers.
  • We're thankful for the patience and discipline of our teachers and coaches who gave us so much more than they were ever paid.
  • We're thankful that everyone did not get a trophy and that we got our grades for achievement and for trying.
  • We're so thankful that this was "One nation under God."
  • We're thankful that we were allowed to open most school days and events with a prayer.
  • We're thankful for our churches and ministers who welcomed us and helped furnish a blueprint for our lives.
  • We're thankful for classmates, teammates, and old friends who still touch our lives.
  • We're especially thankful for our parents and relatives who invested so much in us, helped guide us, and welcomed us, and welcomed us into their homes. They provided us the shoulders on which we now stand and left us with a debt beyond our capacity to repay.
  • We're thankful for all of the people in Mineral Wells who touched our lives and those who defended our country and our lives when we could not.
  • We're thankful for all the contributions our class has been able to make to our society.
  • We're thankful that most of us were allowed to grow older and finally realize a past, a privilege which unfortunately was not granted to everyone.
  • We're thankful for those people in our lives who were taken from us much too soon. We wish them Godspeed and ask only that they save us a place.
  • None of us knows how many more reunions they will be allowed to have, so we're especially thankful for the ones we've been allowed to have.

At this time I would like to say a very special thanks to Patsy Wright Stafford, who graduated with our class, but thank goodness, refused to ever leave, and Bonnie Burkow Bell, who provided the major part of the glue that has helped hold our class together for five decades. At this time, I would like them to please come forward and be recognized.

And in closing, though our class, like most others, has scattered to the four winds, I think most of us will always and forever consider Mineral Wells to be our home.

God bless and keep you all.

Benefitting the Restoration of the
Lillian Peek Home Economics Cottage

The first-ever Hand and Foot Card Tournament was a huge success. Everyone who participated enjoyed the day, the game, getting together with friends and walking away with prizes and money! As one of the ladies said, I feel like I was paid to play!
Local city and county businesses donated items for Door Prizes and Local Artists to the Silent Auction. There was a beautiful, varied array of items sold, increasing the monies given to the Restoration of the Peek Cottage.
The 1st Place winners got $100.00 each which they graciously donated to the Lillian Peek Cottage Restoration Fund. The 2nd Place winners each were awarded with a nice Wine and Cheese Basket with a Gift Card. All players got a door prize.
The Hand and Foot Card Tournament was hosted by the Class of 1962. Their committee did a superb job. They were: Kay Stone Cox, Nancy Martin Buzbee, Linda Carol White Moore, Sue Hill Moore and Lynn Tompkins Waddy.
The tournament gave proceeds of $794.00 to the Restoration Fund for the Lillian Peek Home Economics Cottage. Thank you to all who made this a great success! The Class of 1962 has a dedicated group of representatives. THANK YOU!!

2015 MWHS 50 Year Club 39th Reunion - June 12 - 13

Dear 50 Year Club Members,

Information Letter and Forms about our 2015 Annual MWHS Reunion can be found below and here on our MWHS 50 Year Club website. The reunion is scheduled for June 12th and 13th in the new High School at 3801 Ram Boulevard. Friday evening's registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. so the ones working the registration tables can enjoy visiting also. Light refreshments (not a meal) will be available in the food court beginning at 5:00 p.m. Saturday's fellowship and registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. with coffee, juice and light breakfast. Registration will end at 10:30 a.m. so we can all attend the Induction program for the Class of 1965 at 10:45 a.m. in the High School Auditorium. A catered lunch will be served in the food court at 12:00 noon.

  • In order for the handicapped to be served first, you are asked to please adjourn to the food court to sit at your respective class table(s) until your class is called to line up for lunch.
  • The Class of 1966 will be greeters Friday evening and Saturday morning; Class of 1964 is responsible for Friday evening's snacks, drinks and Saturday morning's coffee, juice and light breakfast; Class of 1963 is responsible for decorations.
  • Once again this year, we will be having a Split the Pot Benefit Drawing. Tickets will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. The drawing will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. You must be present to win.
  • To generate funds for our operating expense account, we are asking you to bring your old cell phones for recycling. A box will be provided near the greeters' table for you to put them in.
WE NEED YOUR HELP

  1. Only approximately 21% of our members paid their dues last year. We cannot successfully operate at this participation level. PLEASE PAY YOUR DUES (even if you can't come.)
  2. As you may know, we now have title to the Lillian Peek Cottage (Old Home Economics Building) and the Amphitheater; what you may not know is that we are renovating the cottage to preserve our heritage and provide a permanent home for the 50 Year Club. The total project is at an estimated cost of close to $200,000. The good news is we have already raised and expended close to $120,000 to further this project. But we need your help to finish raising the balance to complete the job in a manner we can all be proud of. As a model for your action, the Class of 1960 raised and donated $11,999 to complete the foyer. Please come see our progress and if you are able financially, please help us with a donation.
  3. Our 2nd Annual Mountaineer Classic Golf Tournament is being held at Holiday Hills Country Club on Friday, June 12, 2015. PLEASE put together two or three teams (individually or from your class) for a 4 person scramble and help us with this major fund raiser!
  4. We are a 501c3 charitable organization and all donations are tax deductible.
  5. For your convenience, hotel, motel and RV Parks' listings are included in this letter.
We look forward to seeing each and every one of you.

Class of 1962 Loses a Classmate Lowell Sanders after Long Illness

Lowell Sanders
U. S. Navy 1962 – 1966
Nov 15, 1944 - May 26, 2015

We lost another of our beloved classmates, Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Lowell Sanders passed away at his home in Fort Worth after a long illness. Like so many others, Lowell enlisted right after graduation into the U. S. Navy. Being embroiled in the Vietnam Conflict, some in our country didn't want to call it a "war," but our young men and women, like Lowell, knew better. Lowell transported Agent Orange on several different ships to Vietnam during his Military Career. He suffered from Agent Orange Exposure and this week he succumbed to the cruelties it inflicted on his body these last 50 plus years.

He kept in touch with many of his friends and classmates over the years and is going to be missed so much. There were many on Facebook who commented that they had corresponded with him and spoke to him when they could and they shared how he was such a good friend. He was able to attend our 50th Class Reunion in 2012 and his sister, Nancy, told me he spoke of it often. She said she remembered him talking about the Reunion only a few short weeks ago. He enjoyed it so much. Lowell was a member of the Mineral Wells High School Band for four years; he played the clarinet. His brother, Warren Sanders, was in the Class of 1964 and their sister, Nancy Sanders McConnell, was in the Class of 1966. Lowell is the father of two daughters.

Services for Lowell Sanders will be held Thursday, June 4, 2015, at 11:15 a.m. at the DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.
